Discover Reykjavik, the Icelandic capital, like you've never seen it before! Whether you're seeking breathtaking landscapes or an unforgettable adventure, renting a campervan in Reykjavik is the ideal way to explore this fascinating destination. Enjoy the tranquility of the fjords, admire majestic waterfalls, and be captivated by the northern lights. Reykjavik is also rich in cultural treasures, such as the Reykjavik Cathedral and the National Museum, which will immerse you in the heart of Icelandic history and tradition.

Itineraries in Iceland from Reykjavik

Depart from Reykjavik in a campervan to explore iconic Iceland, with its waterfalls, geysers, and volcanic landscapes. These three van-friendly itineraries guide you along Route 1 and the Golden Circle, prioritizing campsites and suitable areas for a complete immersion in autonomy from the capital.

7-10 days

From Reykjavik, embark on 7 to 10 days on the Golden Circle and southern Iceland, ideal for a first campervan road trip. Day 1: Thingvellir, a UNESCO site of tectonic faults, then Geysir and the impressive Gullfoss waterfall. Settle in Fludir for a night at the campsite. Day 2: Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, where you pass behind the waters, before the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara near Vik. Night in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Days 3-4: Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón lagoon, must-sees for glaciers, with easy hikes. Return via Selfoss for a geothermal bath. The 7-10 days allow for a detour to the Snaefellsnes peninsula for its volcanic caps and fishing villages, like Arnarstapi, before wrapping up in Reykjavik. In a van, enjoy dedicated parking and cook your meals with views of the lava fields, respecting authorized camping zones for a serene experience.

14 days

For 14 days from Reykjavik, extend your campervan journey to the west and north, following Route 1 for a perfect balance. Start with Reykjavik and the Golden Circle: Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss. Continue south to Vík with its basalt cliffs and puffins in season, then Skaftafell for hiking to Svartifoss. Midway, divert to the West Fjords via Borgarnes, visiting Hraunfossar and Deildartunguhver, Europe's powerful hot spring. In a van, park at free areas near Stykkishólmur to admire craters and rock arches. Days 10-12: head north to Akureyri via Hvítserkur, an iconic rock formation, and Godafoss. Return via Lake Myvatn, its pseudocraters and bubbling springs, before Reykjavik. This 14-day loop avoids extreme tracks, prioritizing paved roads suitable for campervans, with stops for natural baths and whale watching if possible, for a complete discovery without rushing.

21 days

Take the complete circular route over 21 days starting from Reykjavik in a campervan, covering the entire island with its essentials justified by their iconic status. First, settle in Reykjavik for museums and Hallgrimskirkja. Days 1-5: Golden Circle, glacial south to Jökulsárlón and Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe. Days 6-10: east to Egilsstadir, with Hengifoss and fjords for their unique isolation. Continue north to Husavik for whales, Dettifoss the most powerful in Europe, and geothermal Myvatn. Days 11-15: west via Snaefellsnes, glacier and iconic Kirkjufell, then must-see West Fjords for cliffs and villages. Close the loop by Hraunfossar and return to Reykjavik via Blue Lagoon. In a 4x4 van recommended for light detours, target campsites with electricity, enjoy the midnight sun for late hikes and outdoor cooking facing the auroras, for a comprehensive and memorable odyssey.

Renting a campervan in Reykjavik: when to go on a road trip

When to depart from Reykjavik

Depart from Reykjavik in a campervan or van between June and August to enjoy long days with up to 20 hours of daylight and mild temperatures around 12 to 15°C, ideal for exploring the Golden Circle route. This summer period offers relatively mild weather in Reykjavik, with highs reaching 25°C on rare hot days, despite possible showers.

Avoid March in Reykjavik where temperatures range from -2 to 3°C, with winds at 23 km/h and rain on 14 days, making the roads slippery for a van from the capital.

Weather and pricing seasonality

In Reykjavik, summer sees high rates for campervan rentals due to the peak season, but August remains favored with temperatures of 14 to 16°C and moderate precipitation of 1 to 20 mm per day. Winter, with -5 to 2°C, allows for low rates, although strong winds and snow complicate departures to the southwest.

In autumn in Reykjavik, October accumulates 86 mm of rain over 14.5 days, coinciding with more affordable prices for van travel, while observing northern lights from the outskirts of the capital.

Practical guide for road trip travel in Iceland

Driving and regulations

In Iceland, from Reykjavik, driving a campervan imposes a speed limit of 50 km/h in the city and around the capital and 80 km/h on gravel roads towards the Golden Circle. Low beam headlights must remain on at all times, even during the day on Route 1 leading to Thingvellir, and off-road driving is strictly prohibited to preserve the fragile landscapes near Reykjavik.

The maximum blood alcohol level is 0.5 g/l, and winter tires are mandatory from November to mid-April on secondary roads departing from Reykjavik towards the Reykjanes peninsula.

Sleeping and connecting

Wild camping has been prohibited since 2015 in Iceland; in Reykjavik, park only in official campsites like Laugardalur which offers electrical hookups and sanitary facilities. Near Reykjavik, always obtain written permission from the landowner for any private land, thus avoiding heavy fines in areas like Thingvellir National Park.

Campsites around Reykjavik often close from October to May, but Laugardalur remains accessible for recharging batteries and emptying wastewater at any time of the year.

Local tips and safety

In Reykjavik, avoid parking near discontinuous yellow lines or bus stops along Laugavegur street, and never make an open fire to prevent fire risks in urban areas. Check the Icelandic weather via the Vedur.is app before leaving Reykjavik, as strong winds and slippery roads towards Snæfellsjökull are common.

For safety, equip children under 1.35m with an appropriate seat and always seek permission from the owners of isolated farms near Reykjavik to legally camp for a night.
