Norway, land of majestic fjords and breathtaking landscapes, is home to the charming city of Stavanger, an ideal destination for camper van rental enthusiasts. Nestled in the heart of this region, Stavanger offers privileged access to stunning natural sites, such as the famous Preikestolen, overlooking a fjord of breathtaking beauty. Whether you are looking for outdoor adventures or moments of relaxation, renting a camper van will allow you to discover the treasures of this region at your own pace, with complete freedom.
Stavanger, the ideal gateway for a camper van road trip in southern Norway, offers majestic fjords, iconic hikes, and winding roads suitable for vans. These three emblematic itineraries, starting from Stavanger, explore the region in 7-10 days, 14 days, or 21 days, with convenient camper van areas and the volcanic landscapes of the Magma Geopark, essential for their UNESCO ranking.
Start from Stavanger for a 7 to 10-day camper van loop, centered on the Lysefjord and the Preikestolen, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the world according to Lonely Planet. Settle at the Mosvangen campsite near Stavanger to explore the old white and flower-filled district, its museums accessible via a MUST pass for €10 for nine sites. Drive to the Preikestolen for a 2-hour hike offering breathtaking views of the fjord, parked in a camper van-friendly parking area. Embark on a 3-hour cruise on the Lysefjord with Rødne Fjord Cruise from Stavanger, discovering cliffs and Norwegian history. Continue on the Magma Geopark route 44, with its round rocks and charming ports, perfect for van stops on narrow roads. Return to Stavanger via white sandy beaches, enjoying free areas like the marina 25 minutes from the center.
From Stavanger, this 14-day camper van circuit winds through southern Norway over approximately 500 km, including the must-see route 44 from Flekkefjord to Egersund for its sublime coastal landscapes. Start with 2-3 days in Stavanger: colorful pedestrian streets, Viking Museum, and lively port with cruise ships. Head towards Preikestolen and hike to Kjeragbolten, the iconic rock wedged in a crevice. Explore the UNESCO Magma Geopark with its anorthosite cliffs and sheep herds, ideal for discreet wild fishing. Continue to Lindesnes, the southern lighthouse and the underwater restaurant Under for a view of the seabed. Settle your van at campsites like those suggested on the route to Kristiansand, 250 km away, before a Color Line ferry to Denmark if extending your trip. Return to Stavanger via Mandal and its coves, adapting the stops to the winding roads favorable for camper vans.
This 21-day camper van journey fully immerses you in the world of Stavanger and its hinterland, with extensive loops justifying a brief detour to Kristiansand to close with a ferry to Denmark, as on the classic 2-3 week itinerary. Start with 4 days in Stavanger: old Stavanger in bloom, oil museums, and street art in pedestrian alleys, parked at Mosvangen or central service area. Hike Preikestolen, Trolltunga, and Kjeragbolten for breathtaking fjord views, with van parking available. Spend 10 days on the RV44 of the Magma Geopark, volcanic rocks and nestled ports, fishing while bivouacking. Head down to Lindesnes for the lighthouse and Under, then Mandal, Flekkefjord-Egersund. End in Kristiansand at 250 km, boarding Color Line for a 3h15 crossing. Return to explore Stavanger in depth, its events and tunnels like Ryfast, with flexibility for variable weather on these narrow but secured roads for camper vans.

Norway, with its majestic fjords like the Lysefjord accessible from Stavanger, invites you to camper van road trips, especially during the periods from May to September to enjoy long sunny days and temperatures reaching 25 degrees in the south.
July and August concentrate the crowds around Preikestolen and the lively port of Stavanger, while May or September offer lush nature at Lysefjord with fewer tourists and better availability from rental companies on the outskirts of the city.
In Stavanger, summer ensures a mild climate ideal for exploring Gamle Stavanger and its historic wooden houses, but camper van rental rates rise in high season from June to August due to increased demand.
Opt for April-May or late August-September for mild conditions towards the Ryfast tunnel and the Viking House, with early booking discounts of up to 10% from rental companies in Stavanger and pleasant weather despite possible showers.
This list gives you a good overview of the offer of motorhomes, campervans, and other vehicles in Norway. Please note that not all of these vehicles are necessarily available at all rental agencies of our partners. To find out about the available vehicle options for your road trip, please use the search form at the top of this page. You can then filter the results by rental company, price, type of motorhomes, compare rental offers and their options, check availability, save your offers, and of course book online when your choice is made!
In Norway, from Stavanger, camper vans are limited to 50 km/h in cities and 80 km/h on ordinary roads and highways, with a requirement to keep low beam headlights on at all times and to respect right-hand priority. The roads to the Preikestolen plateau from Stavanger may be subject to electronic tolls and closed in case of strong winds on certain bridges, while winter tires are required from November to April on surrounding mountain routes.
A category B license is sufficient for camper vans up to 3.5 tons, valid without additional formalities from France, but check for signs prohibiting access to vans on trails like those leading to the Lysefjord near Stavanger.
Thanks to Allemannsretten, wild camping is allowed at least 150 meters from homes around Stavanger, such as on natural parking areas near the old port of Gamle Stavanger, but respect the "NO CAMPING" signs at popular tourist sites. The Sandviga Parking offers limited spaces for vans, with possible connections, ideal for a night before exploring the Lysefjord fjord.
Equipped campsites like those by the sea in Stavanger provide electricity and waste disposal, but many close out of season; opt for dedicated areas to recharge gas bottles with specific adapters available locally.
In Stavanger, avoid parking near the wooden houses of the historic Gamle Stavanger district and respect the blood alcohol limit of 0.02% for a safe drive to the Lindesnes lighthouse in the south. Campfires are prohibited from April 15 to September 15, even by the sea in Rogaland, to prevent fires.
If in doubt about a spot near the Preikestolen plateau, ask the locals in Stavanger; fines for wild parking are high, and equip yourself with a mandatory child seat for all passengers.
In Stavanger, as in most cities, motorhome rental agencies are not located in the centre but on the outskirts.

First rental of this type of vehicle in a professional context where the rental must take place from France to Canada. Many questions and Cooldrive (Marlène) has been a valuable support in guiding my choices. Efficiency and responsiveness beforehand, and on-site a vehicle and service that met our expectations. No complaints. Great!
Too rigid computer system
Very good customer experience with Cooldrive. I highly recommend it! Thanks to the team who were attentive and available for organizing my trip to Canada.
Great experience with Cooldrive. I highly recommend it 100%. Reliable, attentive, available, responsive. Thanks to Marléne for her support.
Initially, the camper offered online was not available, but a good alternative was quickly provided. The communication regarding the various steps to be taken is clear. The camper was from 2025 and was clean and complete. The pick-up in Norway took longer than expected (4 hours), but in the end, it became a vacation to never forget. Highly recommended!
No unpleasant surprises
Cooldrive recommended that I take out insurance, which turned out to be unable to handle an issue that arose during the stay.
Top rates and service
Impeccable
Quick and efficient response
Everything was quick and quite simple. Just a small downside upon arrival, we waited a good amount of time before being taken care of.
Perfect
Interesting price, clear file and follow-up. Very easy to get answers to our questions, very pleasant staff.
We rented a campervan for a trip to Iceland. Everything went well. Good service from Cooldrive.
Great vacation in the Baltic States. When everything goes well, it is easy to speak highly of the people who helped you. But beyond the quality of the vehicle and the welcome from the rental company, it is also important to note the support received from Cooldrive, which responded quickly to all our requests. This provides a sense of security that allows you to truly relax, knowing that in case of...
great experience! The CoolDrive agents are very helpful with all the procedures
Incorrect information about the rental dates resulting in a charge for an additional day despite my inquiries to Cool Drive right after my booking. Refusal to modify my reservation because it did not lead to a change in price. Incorrect information confirmed by the rental company that was expecting a response the next day...
The whole booking, communication, and actual rental experience has been smooth, effective, and enjoyable. Not sure how that could have been any better, at least in our experience, other than perhaps a final communication just before the start of the rental (but really, we had all info and details already). Collection and return of the motorhome was smooth and friendly staff (from iCaravan). All in...
Very good from the quote to the rental, I recommend!
Good and quick communication, easy to book and easy to follow all the instructions.
Easy to contact intermediary. For my part, a big thank you to Marlene for her availability and responsiveness.
Excellent service, speed, and courtesy
Easy communication, in French
They have always responded quickly to all my requests and their website is very functional!
Everything was well arranged, clear information in advance, and the handover of the mobile home went smoothly.
It is convenient to book a vehicle without too many questions. However, personally, I went to Iceland, and the story surrounding the insurance was really not clear with the rental agency.
Diversity of offerings, clear presentation of the site, available options. No surprises on the price; you know what you're paying for. I recommend it and will probably use it again for other camper van trips.
Responsiveness to emails and requests is excellent.
Everything went well.
