Amsterdam, the city of canals and brick houses, is a top destination for camper van rental enthusiasts. Enjoy the beauty of its urban landscapes, the rich history unfolding there, and the vibrancy of its cultural life. Whether you want to discover the Rijksmuseum and its masterpieces, stroll along the banks of Prinsengracht, or simply soak in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the Dutch capital, renting a camper van proves to be the ideal way to explore the treasures of Amsterdam at your own pace.

Itineraries and road trips from Amsterdam

Discover the Netherlands by camper van starting from Amsterdam, between historic canals, postcard villages, and vast natural spaces. These three iconic itineraries, ranging from 7 to 21 days, combine reasonable driving times and stops suitable for vans and camper vans. From the vibrant cultural life of Amsterdam to the mills, polders, and national parks, you build a flexible trip, with enough time to drive, wander, and enjoy well-equipped areas and campsites.

7-10 days around Amsterdam

For 7 to 10 days, set up your base camp near Amsterdam and explore the city by bike or tram from a well-serviced campsite. Spend two to three days on the canals, museums, and lively neighborhoods of Amsterdam, then hit the road to Haarlem, "little Amsterdam" ideal for camper vans with its peripheral parking. Continue to the villages of the IJsselmeer region, like Volendam, Marken, or Edam, easily accessible by van and perfect for alternating walks and nights in small campsites. Finish near the dunes or beaches of the north, before returning leisurely to Amsterdam for a last evening by the water.

14 days: culture, sea, and countryside loop

On a 14-day trip from Amsterdam, plan three days to fully enjoy the capital by leaving the camper van in a dedicated area, then head towards Haarlem and the beaches of the North Sea. Continue to Leiden, Delft, and Rotterdam, cities perfect for a camper van road trip with many urban or suburban campsites. Then head back up to Gouda and Utrecht, with compact historic centers easy to explore by bike from your location. End with the region of mills and villages of the IJsselmeer before returning to Amsterdam, where you can still spend a night in a green campsite to unwind before heading back.

21 days: grand tour of the Netherlands by camper van

With 21 days, start from Amsterdam for a grand tour of the Netherlands by camper van, taking the time to slow down. After several days in Amsterdam, head down to The Hague, Delft, and Rotterdam, then follow the Zeeland coast to enjoy campsites near the beaches. Then head back through the polders and nature reserves, planning two or three-night stops for hiking and biking. Continue to lakeside villages like Giethoorn, before heading towards Friesland and the Groningen region. Gradually return through the landscapes of dikes and mills, with a final stop near Amsterdam to enjoy the canals at sunset.

When to travel, weather, and seasonality of rates for vans from Amsterdam

From Amsterdam, the vibrant cultural capital of the Netherlands, traveling by camper van allows you to follow the seasons along the Amstel canals, the streets of Jordaan, and the dikes that gradually move away from Amsterdam Centraal station.

When to travel by camper van from Amsterdam

For a camper van departure from Amsterdam, the months from April to September offer the most pleasant conditions, with mild temperatures along the Amstel quays and in the streets bordering Dam Square. In spring, Amsterdam is covered with tulips all the way to Vondelpark, and a van trip allows you to leave the museum district around the Rijksmuseum to easily reach the flower fields of the Dutch countryside.

In the height of summer, the long and bright days transform the banks around Amsterdam Centraal into a true gateway to the beaches and polders, but the tourist influx in the historic center, from Anne Frank's house to the Jordaan district, means you should book your camper van or overnight spot early.

Weather in Amsterdam and driving comfort

The oceanic climate of Amsterdam, tempered by the IJ and the proximity of the North Sea, rarely becomes extreme, but the weather can change quickly between Dam Square and the renovated docks of the Eastern Docklands. In spring, temperatures rise quickly between Vondelpark and the De Pijp district, offering cool but sunny days ideal for reaching the villages north of the city by camper van.

In summer, the weather alternates between showers and beautiful sunny spells on the canals of Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht, which remains comfortable for driving a van when leaving Amsterdam via the A10 ring road. In autumn and winter, rain, wind, and fog more frequently visit the Museumplein and around the Van Gogh Museum, making evenings wetter for camper van travelers parked near Amsterdam Noord or in the suburbs.

Seasonality of rates from Amsterdam

From Amsterdam, camper van or van rental rates increase significantly between June and August, when accommodations around Jordaan, Leidseplein, and the canal belt also reach their highest prices. This high season coincides with the peak tourist traffic around Amsterdam Centraal, which also raises long-term parking and nearby area costs.

On the other hand, by choosing a departure in spring or early autumn from Amsterdam, prices are generally milder, whether for a vehicle picked up near Schiphol Airport or at an agency close to Amsterdam Sloterdijk station. In winter, when the terraces of Rembrandtplein empty and museums like the Rijksmuseum become quieter, van rental rates from Amsterdam can be more attractive, provided you accept shorter days and colder weather to travel the country.

Traveling by camper van from Amsterdam: practical guide

The Netherlands offers an ideal destination for camper van road trip enthusiasts, with its charming canals and varied landscapes. However, Dutch regulations impose strict rules regarding driving, parking, and access to environmental zones, particularly around Amsterdam.

Driving and road regulations

When leaving Amsterdam, you must adhere to specific speed limits based on the weight of your camper van. In urban areas, the limit is 50 km/h, while outside urban areas it is 80 km/h for vehicles over 3.5 tons and 80 km/h for those under 3.5 tons. On highways, camper vans over 3.5 tons are limited to 100 km/h, compared to 130 km/h for lighter ones. All occupants must wear seat belts, and you must have a warning triangle on board. Pay special attention to cyclists, who are very numerous in the Netherlands and always have priority.

Amsterdam has a strict low-emission zone: diesel camper vans not meeting Euro 4 standards or higher are not allowed to circulate there. An exemption permit may be required if you are heading to a campsite located in this zone. The maximum allowed blood alcohol level is 0.5 g/l for drivers with more than 5 years of license and 0.2 g/l for others.

Parking and accommodation

Wild camping is strictly prohibited in the Netherlands and subject to very high fines, ranging from 350 to 500 euros. From Amsterdam, you must use designated parking areas or campsites. Each Dutch municipality regulates the right to sleep in your vehicle on public roads differently, so it is essential to check local rules before stopping. Parking in public lots is allowed in some cases, but many parking areas explicitly prohibit camper vans, especially at night or for extended periods, with common height restrictions of 2.10 meters.

To organize your stay from Amsterdam, consult specialized websites that list authorized parking spots in the Netherlands. Avoid parking less than 5 meters from an intersection or on the roadway outside urban areas. The two toll tunnels in the country, the Kiltunnel in Dordrecht and the Westerscheldetunnel, may be on your route depending on your destination.

Local tips and safety

Before leaving Amsterdam, ensure your camper van has all the mandatory equipment: certified fire extinguisher of at least 1 kg, high-visibility safety vests for each passenger, and first aid kit. Your liability insurance must be up to date, and if your vehicle is registered outside the Netherlands, you must have a green insurance card. Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, although hands-free kits are allowed.

Some Dutch cities like Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Arnhem impose additional restrictions on older diesel vehicles. Rotterdam requires a fee of 25.90 euros to circulate for a maximum of 12 days per year, while Utrecht prohibits access to diesel vehicles from before 2001. Arnhem has banned diesel vehicles from before 2004 since 2019. Check specific environmental zones before venturing into these cities from Amsterdam.
