However, it is also the peak tourist season, which leads to increased camping fees and higher crowds, especially in areas close to Amsterdam.

The Netherlands offers an ideal destination for camper van enthusiasts, with its picturesque canals and charming villages, but traffic and parking are subject to strict rules that are essential to know. Discover the main regulations for a smooth stay in Holland.

Driving and road regulations

In the Netherlands, traffic drives on the right with priority to the right, and special attention must be paid to the bicycles that are omnipresent and always have priority. Speed limits vary according to the type of vehicle: in urban areas, the limit is 50 km/h, outside urban areas it is 80 km/h for camper vans over 3.5 tons and also 80 km/h, while on highways, vehicles under 3.5 tons can drive at 130 km/h and those over 3.5 tons at 100 km/h. All occupants must wear seat belts, and the use of mobile phones while driving is strictly prohibited. The legal blood alcohol limit must not exceed 0.5 g/l, except for young drivers under 24 years old for whom it is 0 g/l.

Environmental zones, called Milieuzone, restrict access for older diesel vehicles in certain cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Arnhem. In Rotterdam, a fee of €25.90 allows for circulation a maximum of 12 days per year, while in Utrecht, diesel vehicles registered before January 1, 2001 are outright banned. In Arnhem, diesel vehicles registered before 2004 have been prohibited since 2019. These zones are monitored by cameras that record license plates.

Parking and accommodation

Wild camping is strictly prohibited in the Netherlands and is subject to very high fines that can reach €350 to €500. You must use designated parking areas or campsites. Parking in regular parking spaces is allowed, but it is prohibited to spend the night on public roads or in non-designated parking areas. Additionally, parking is prohibited within 5 meters of an intersection or on the roadway outside urban areas.

To park legally, prefer official campsites or service areas specifically designed for camper vans. Inspections are regular, and Dutch authorities enforce regulations rigorously, even outside urban areas. Also, ensure you have all mandatory equipment: warning triangle, certified fire extinguisher of at least 1 kg, high visibility safety vests for each occupant, and first aid kit.

Local tips and safety

Before you leave, check that your driver's license is valid and, if it is not written in French, English, German, or Italian, obtain an international driver's license. Your liability insurance is mandatory, and if your vehicle is registered outside the Netherlands, you must have a green insurance card. Winter tires and snow chains are not mandatory in the Netherlands, unlike in other European countries.

Be vigilant in the environmental zones of major cities like The Hague and Amsterdam, where restrictions apply 24 hours a day all year round. Also note that the Netherlands has two toll tunnels: the Kiltunnel in Dordrecht and the Westerscheldetunnel. Finally, strictly adhere to traffic rules, especially the priority for bicycles and the counterclockwise direction in roundabouts, to ensure your safety and that of other road users.
